If a given team wins enough titles in an allotted period of time, it is a &#8220;Dynasty.&#8221; 100 years from now, people will look at the New York Giants&#8217; recent Super Bowl run and potentially refer to it as a Dynasty. In fact &#8212; somewhere in a dingy Secaucus, New Jersey bar &#8212; this is undoubtedly happening <em>right now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But does anyone seriously consider the recent Giants to be better than the St. Louis Rams teams of the 2000s?<\/p>\n<p>From 1999-2004, St. Louis made the playoffs five times in six years, with a record of 56-32, including 6-4 in the playoffs. Outside of winning the Super Bowl in &#8217;99, StL was just 3-4 in its other playoff appearances.<\/p>\n<p>What killed the Rams being regarded as a dynasty was Mike Martz and his stupid, inexplicable boner for Marc Bulger. Martz was hell-bent on benching the man with the greatest statistical three-year run in NFL history, Kurt Warner, for nerd-ling Bulger. Bulger&#8217;s game was much like his personality &#8212; robotic and completely dead inside.<\/p>\n<p>The Bulger problem was indicative of a greater issue &#8212; Martz was a terrible personnel man and an even worse coach.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if Dick Vermeil hadn&#8217;t left after winning the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Martz gets so much credit for being an &#8220;offensive genius,&#8221; but the real genius was Vermeil. Martz knew that sex sells and a big cocked, productive offense covered up a lot of other &#8220;holes&#8221; that would gape more largely with each passing season.<\/p>\n<p>The Rams led the league in offense and scoring for three straight years from &#8217;99-&#8217;01. But, in &#8217;02, when Martz made the ludicrous switch to Bulger, the offense took a big shit (23rd in points), but the defense &#8212; the unsung hero to that point &#8212; also fell to 23rd, after consistently leading the league in turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>23rd in points scored and 23rd in points given up is the prefect recipe for a .500 record, or, in this case, 7-9.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, the Rams couldn&#8217;t score points. Coincidentally &#8212; at the exact same time &#8212; Kansas City, Vermeil&#8217;s new team, became the most productive offense in the league, finishing 1st or 2nd in scoring in three of the next five years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3545\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3545\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3545 size-large lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/lindsay-lohan-boobs-1024x964.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"655\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3545 size-large lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/lindsay-lohan-boobs-1024x964.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"655\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Ummm, like, give it to that Marshall dude again. And then like, keep giving it to him and stuff.&#8221; &#8211; Lindsay Lohan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, who is responsible for the Rams failing to become a legit dynasty by winning at least two Super Bowls?<\/p>\n<p>Mike Martz, without question.<\/p>\n<p>And &#8212; in &#8220;Great Gatsby-esque&#8221; fashion &#8212; he passed himself off as an offensive genius, when all he did was work for Vermeil, the true mastermind, at the right time &#8212; a monkey could have done the same job.<\/p>\n<p>Christ, even Lindsay Lohan would have succeeded. Even a monkey being blown <em>by<\/em> Lindsay Lohan <em>while<\/em> watching another monkey call plays <em>while<\/em> eating a banana, seductively, would have succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>The Braves, just like the Rams (and Lindsay Lohan, who I would definitely still raw dog <em>right now<\/em>), were an absolute doormat for years. In 1991, it all turned around.<\/p>\n<p>After winning 65 games in 1990, Atlanta hired Bobby Cox, immediately won 94 games and made the World Series &#8212; where it lost to Minnesota in seven games, in what was the most entertaining World Series I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>Equally entertaining was the Braves&#8217; seven game NLCS victory over the &#8220;Killer B&#8221;-led Pittsburgh Pirates, including a dramatic bottom of the ninth, in which ATL scored three runs to win the game and the pennant &#8212; <em>Sid Fucking Bream<\/em>, bitch!<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FgjIVvEQo_o\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The following season was almost identical &#8212; Atlanta won 98 games, beat Pittsburgh again in a seven-game NLCS (poor Doug Drabek, always a bridesmaid, never a bride) and again lost the World Series, this time in six games to the Toronto Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, Atlanta had its best regular season yet, winning 104 games. People started taking the Braves for granted. Atlanta took itself for granted and lost to the Philles in a six-game NLCS.<\/p>\n<p>In three years, Atlanta went from a complete piece-of-shit franchise with a shitty stadium, to the NL&#8217;s best franchise &#8212; with two WS appearances and three division titles &#8230; with a shitty stadium.<\/p>\n<p>But people began to talk shit because ATL couldn&#8217;t win the big one.<\/p>\n<p>Best starting rotation in the majors. Terry Pendleton won the MVP in &#8217;91 and was 2nd in &#8217;92. Deion Sanders led the league in triples. Young David Justice looked like a future HOF-er. Ron Gant&#8217;s ARMS!<\/p>\n<p>Ron Gant&#8217;s <em>FUCKING ARMS<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>But Atlanta couldn&#8217;t win the World Series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2628\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2628 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ron-gant-arms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"714\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2628 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ron-gant-arms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"714\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RON GANT&#8217;S ARMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The strike happened in &#8217;94 and the Braves didn&#8217;t win a thing (so sad that the Montreal Expos were the best team in the majors after 114 games and got absolutely no recognition, unless you count getting their roster raped by every other MLB team and then the forcible relocation of the franchise).<\/p>\n<p>In &#8217;95, Atlanta finally won the World Series. In &#8217;96, the Braves made it again &#8212; and lost.<\/p>\n<p>In &#8217;99, ATL made it again &#8230; and got swept.<\/p>\n<p>In between those two WS appearances, Atlanta made the NLCS twice &#8230; and lost in six games, both times.<\/p>\n<p>In eight seasons (excluding the strike year), the Braves appeared in five World Series and three NLCS &#8212; but 14 straight division titles and only one WS victory, &#8220;does not a dynasty make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the point of this article?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t fucking know.<\/p>\n<p>But I do know that the line between a recognized &#8220;sports dynasty&#8221; and a &#8220;perennially good&#8221; team is razor thin, like John Waters&#8217; mustache.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we should loosen our standards a little, like Lindsay Lohan at a keg party in &#8217;99, or take Riggo&#8217;s famous advice to Sandra Day O&#8221;Connor and, &#8220;Loosen up, Sandy baby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2629 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/john-riggins-sandra-day-white-house.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"414\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2629 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/john-riggins-sandra-day-white-house.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"414\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Riggo at the White House was absolutely fucking EPIC &#8212; Washington Post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Riggins told Roll Call that he was nervous around such heavyweights, and so to \u201cloosen up,\u201d he had a few double scotches and chased that with several glasses of wine \u2014 all on an empty stomach.<\/p>\n<p>The 240-pound football player also slept on the floor for an hour as Vice President George Bush and other dignitaries spoke to the crowd of 1,300 at the Washington Press Club\u2019s annual salute to Congress banquet Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Riggins was later helped from the room by two editors of People magazine who had been seated at his table.<\/p>\n<p>Douglas Woloshin, Riggins\u2019 agent, said he spoke to the player Thursday, and \u201che said he had a good time \u2014 a very nice time, in fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of those at Riggins\u2019 table, People\u2019s Washington bureau chief Garry Clifford, confirmed that Riggins told Mrs. O\u2019Connor, \u201cCome on Sandy baby, loosen up.
